GithubBible Verse Tips
Preview Bible verses inline and read whole chapters without leaving your notes.
Hover any Bible reference — in Reading view and Live Preview — to preview the verse in a clean popover, then click the reference to open the whole chapter in a distraction-free reader (with ‹ › chapter navigation).
On mobile, tap a reference to show the preview; tap the version code to switch translation, and tap anywhere else to dismiss.
No setup and no API key required.
What it detects
Full book names and common abbreviations, with or without verses/ranges:
John 3:161 Corinthians 13:4-7Rom 8:28,Ps 23,Mt 6:9Genesis 1(whole chapter)
Matching is case-sensitive (references are virtually always capitalized), so ordinary prose like "my job 2 days ago" is left alone.
Translations
Switch versions on the fly from the selector inside the preview popover; the setting just picks the default. Available versions include NIV, NLT, ESV, NKJV, NASB, AMP, MSG, NET, KJV, WEB and many more — English plus Latin / Portuguese / German / Greek / Hebrew / Chinese.
Settings
- Default translation — the version used until you switch in the popover.
- Show verse preview on — Hover (preview on hover; click opens the chapter) or Click (click shows the preview). Mobile always uses tap.
- Click opens full chapter — hover mode only; turn off to make click show the preview instead.
- Keep preview open when hovering it — hover mode only; turn on to mouse onto the preview to use the switcher and scroll longer passages.
- Hover delay — how long before the preview appears.
Command palette: "Open Bible reference…" jumps to any chapter directly.
Network use
Verse text is fetched on demand from two public Bible APIs and cached for the session:
- bolls.life — NIV, NLT, ESV, NKJV, NASB and most others.
- bible-api.com — public-domain texts (WEB, KJV, …).
Only the reference you hover/open (e.g. John 3) is sent. Nothing else leaves
your vault. The "Open on Bible Gateway" link in the chapter reader opens
biblegateway.com in your browser.
