Month Folder Order

Obsidian sorts folders alphabetically. If you keep daily notes in month folders, that gets you April, August, December, February, January. This plugin shows them January through December instead.

No settings. Nothing to rename. When a new year starts it just works.

Built-in File Explorer only. Notebook Navigator and other replacement explorers render their own lists, and this plugin can't reach those.

What counts as a month folder

A folder qualifies when two or more of its subfolders have a month name in them. Whole words only, so "Marketing" is not March and "Maybe" is not May.

English month names always work. So do month names in whatever language Obsidian is set to, full or abbreviated: Januar-2026, février 2026, janv. 2026, август 2025.

Folders that don't look like month containers are left completely alone.

How it works

The plugin writes a single <style> element that reorders the month rows with flexbox order. Display only. It never reads, writes, renames, moves, or deletes anything in your vault. Your actual sort setting is untouched. Disable the plugin and the explorer is exactly as it was.

It rebuilds automatically when files are created, renamed, or deleted. If the order ever looks stale there's a Refresh month folder order command.

Install

Manual, for now:

  1. Copy main.js and manifest.json into <your vault>/.obsidian/plugins/month-folder-order/
  2. Reload Obsidian
  3. Enable it under Settings → Community plugins

Limitations

  • Built-in File Explorer only. Worth saying twice.
  • A folder needs at least two month-named subfolders before anything happens. One month folder on its own proves nothing.
  • Non-month folders and loose files inside a month container get pushed below the months.
